“From Attention to Action: Applying the AIDA Model in Pet Industry Marketing”

Each buyer’s journey is different regarding their needs, what made them realize the need, what would entice them to purchase a solution to their problem, and what the perfect solution for them would be. Some impulse buyers may see a pretty-colored leash and matching collar and decide they “need” it. Still, we must aim our marketing strategies at potential buyers trying to research products and services for their specific needs.

The AIDA Model

In an article about the AIDA Model, HubSpot explains, “The AIDA model describes the four stages a consumer goes through before making a purchase decision. The stages are Attention, Interest, Desire, and Action (AIDA).” This model allows brands to effectively reach their target audience at each stage of their buyer’s journey.

Let’s discuss how this can be applied to the pet industry.

Attention

This is where we want to attract attention to our brand. With so many businesses entering the pet industry each year, we must ensure that current and potential customers know our brand exists and draw attention to our offerings. By gaining the audience’s attention, we will start getting them interested in our products or services, moving them to the next step of our model.

Interest

Once our audience knows about our products or services, we need to generate interest from them and showcase our brand in a way that appeals specifically to them. This is where we need to share the benefits of our solution to their problem or need that we have identified. Personalizing communications can allow customers to feel a connection with a brand. Once they are interested in our offerings, we can let customers know that we hear them, too, using our brand voice and personalization strategies. We need the customer to understand how our product or service is an excellent fit for them. We need to hold their attention and get them interested to get them to move forward to the next step of our model.

Desire

Now that we have held their attention and developed an interest in our brand, our audience must trust it. This is where desire comes into play. Share knowledge of your section of the pet industry and your brand story, explaining why you created your brand and offering the products and services that will be able to help other pet owners and businesses in their daily lives. Show that you are an expert in your field and have passion and trust in your community by sharing testimonials and offering additional benefits that make your brand stand out. By doing this, you can develop and build trust with potential customers.

Action

Now that we have our audience’s attention, we have drawn their interest and created a desire for our offerings in the first three steps of this model; we need to move them to act. Action is the step where the customer sees the need and makes the purchase, signs up for the newsletter, or books services with us. Using a call-to-action (CTA) that makes sense to the customer and their current place in the buyer’s journey will make it more likely that they do act. Following up after they act is not a bad idea either. This will allow them to see that you are keeping their trust even after the purchase by following up and verifying their satisfaction with your brand and checking in to see if there are any other ways that your company can help them with different needs.

Continued Growth for the Pet Industry

More pet owners are taking that last step in the model and acting by making purchases year after year. This is why we can continue to see the pet industry grow. According to a post from the American Pet Products Association sharing statistics for the pet industry, “$147 billion was spent on our pets in 2023. $150 billion in sales is projected for 2024. The pet industry supplied an overall economic contribution of $303 billion in 2023, an increase of 16% from 2022.” These numbers show us that our industry is only continuing to grow, and we need to find ways to not only be present in the industry but also bring attention to our brand and share this with our customers in a way that showcases why our business is a superior option to our competition.

In the pet industry, entrepreneurs must always look for new avenues to offer that extra step or effort, which will help strengthen the relationship between a brand and its customers. The AIDA model should be one of many focuses when creating marketing strategies for your business, but it is an excellent framework for developing content with a purpose.
